Baby Basics

Here to help you become a confident parent

It’s natural for new parents to feel anxious. You’ve just found yourself in charge of a small unpredictable human who doesn’t talk, doesn’t sleep and doesn’t come with an instruction manual. Who wouldn’t be confused?

But being anxious isn’t much fun. So, I’m here to help. Most antenatal classes focus on pregnancy and birth, but what comes after is often much harder. And that’s where Baby Basics support and workshops come in.

Master new skills you can use to make parenting easier and more joyful for you and your baby. And learn to trust your instincts, so you can find your own beautiful, unique way of being a parent.

You’re also invited to become part of a free support community where you can connect with other parents during this precious and exhausting time.

“Andrea’s fantastic. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to any new parent who wants to learn the baby tricks of the trade. She’s very knowledgeable and helps you learn in such a personal and friendly way.”

How I came to support new parents

I’m Andrea, and I use the pronouns she and her. I’m mother to three children, and live with my partner, the kids, two cats, and some badly behaved chickens in Lyttelton.

Born in Bavaria in Germany, ever since childhood I’ve loved science and sharing knowledge. My mission to support new parents began while I was training to be a paediatric nurse.

At that time, breastfeeding rates in Germany were low. But one senior nurse in my team was trained as a lactation consultant. She was a born teacher and introduced me to the wonder of breastfeeding.

Training as a nurse also showed me the rewards of supporting others. Working on the maternity ward I taught new parents gentle baby care skills.

Moving to New Zealand & finding my purpose

Fast forward to 2008. My partner and I came to New Zealand for a working holiday and fell in love with this place.

After working in Christchurch Public Hospital, Christchurch Women’s Hospital, and having my third child, I qualified as a breastfeeding peer supporter and started a breastfeeding support group in Lyttelton.

I needed help to breastfeed all three of my children. So, I know how hard it can be. Support from La Leche League meant so much to me at that time. It also changed my journey, as I realised I too had the skills and experience to support new parents breastfeeding and caring for their baby.

My mission is to help new parents become confident in your own intuitive approach to parenting.

 A safe space for everyone

This is a safe space for all new parents. As part of the Safe Space Alliance, I welcome and support divers communities. I also welcome single parents, and anyone wanting to learn how to support new parents.

Most of all, I’m here to listen. You can tell me anything and ask me anything. This is a safe space where it’s all about the wellbeing of your new family.

“I can’t recommend Andrea and Baby Basics enough. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience. Her support and encouragement as I navigated the vulnerable first few days of motherhood gave me the confidence to follow my instincts. This was invaluable to me after hearing so much contrasting information during my stay in hospital. Andrea’s grounded, gentle guidance relieved my anxieties and empowered me in my new role as a mother. Thank you!”
